Kentridge spoke about the studio as a space of contestation, play and free association and introduced the audience to the Centre for the Less Good Idea, the new collaborative art centre he founded in Johannesburg. They are featured in the section Being There , which focuses on work by 15 artists from South Africa. Focusing on various capital cities around Africa, the multimedia exhibition presents viewers with the opportunity to experience the ambiance of an African metropolis.
Composed of six large-scale installations by the artist, music and drama are ruptured by revolution, exile and scientific advancement, highlights include the film work Second-hand Reading , the installation O Sentimental Machine and The Refusal of Time , an immersive work created with composer Philip Miller, projection designer Catherine Meyburgh, choreographer Dada Masilo, scientist Peter Galison and collaborators from around the world. Until 15 January Titled Conversations in letters and lines ,and running from 19 November until 19 February , the exhibition brings together the work of Kentridge and Koorland, who come from the same generation of South African artists.
Born in the s, they first met as university students in the mids and have been talking about art ever since. This exhibition foregrounds a friendship of nearly forty years and a dialogue which has been mutually enriching as the practice of each has informed that of the other. The play held its premier at the Market Theatre 20 years ago, and after extensive international touring it returns to South Africa for a limited season. The group show fills all the space inside the deconsecrated Church of San Francesco and, with works by 30 artists from different generations and different parts of the world, it illustrates the various ways in which video can be used as a narrative image-based tool.
At venues in the the Haus der Berliner Festspiele, as well as at the Martin-Gropius-Bau, Kentridge will show both his performative pieces as well as his visual art work from 12 May to 13 July. Theatrical pieces include Winterreise , an evening of Schubert lieder, as well as Ubu and the Truth Commission created with the Handspring Puppet Company.

The frieze is due to be completed in and will be marked by a musical event in collaboration with composer Philip Miller. The installation was facilitated by Galleria Lia Rumma. Triumphs and Laments is a project initiated by Tevereterno under the direction of Kristin Jones. Through April Music for the film was composed and made by the Cape Town based composer Neo Muyanga. The exhibition features six to seven rooms or sections comprising works ranging from to Museo de Arte del Banco de la Republica, Bogota. For EYE Amsterdam, until 30 August, William Kentridge has developed More Sweetly Play the Dance , a metre-long frieze that depicts an endless parade of figures taken from media images of people fleeing from hunger, war and sickness.
These Kentridge sublimates into an impressive procession that evokes their sadness yet also conveys their vitality. On 28 May Kentridge will be in conversation with opera and theatre director, and former director of the Holland Festival Pierre Audi in the event titled Around Lulu. This series drawings are made on the pages of an old cash book from East Rand Proprietary Mines from with a few from other mine ledgers , in which the text under the drawings, either covered or glimpsed, is an important part of the history of the drawing. What is hidden by the landscape? What traces are left in the landscape by the actions upon it? In what way does nature reclaim this damaged ground and erase its history? The drawings were done over a three year period, and range from the East Rand to the platinum belt. Accompanying the exhibition is a launch of a book which reproduces the drawings and includes a text by Rosalind Morris, Professor of Anthropology at Columbia University.
The practice was then extended to cardboard cut-outs and then into three dimensional cardboard sculptures.

Tango for Page Turning is a film fragment made for the theatre piece Refuse the Hour This and its companion piece, the 5-channel video installation The Refusal of Time, arose in part out of a series of conversations between South African artist William Kentridge and American historian of science Peter Galison on matters including the history of the control of world time, relativity, black holes, and string theory.
Music for both projects was created by Philip Miller. The words are a jumbled-up, random juxtaposition of words which originate in the English translation of Spectre de la Rose. Using Dada-ist techniques of cutting up the poem into word fragments and mixing them up in a hat, Miller re-assembled the words into a new version of the poem. The dancing figure on the pages is drawn from Dada Masilo, who both choreographed and danced in Refuse the Hour.

The flip-book film Second-hand Reading was constructed from the successive filming of drawings on the pages of old books — a second-hand reading of those books. He notes that the book is over determined.

Books call to be drawn upon in a certain way, depending on how they absorb charcoal. There are some that have very shiny paper and from which a charcoal mark can be brushed off very easily.
There are others whose sheets hold the ink very beautifully and keep their flatness, like the pages of the Shorter Oxford English Dictionary used for this work. There is the possibility of multiplicity, of buying one volume and finding within it nine hundred and seventy or twelve hundred and forty pages waiting to be drawn on.
There is something about a dictionary that suggests abundance; abundance of words.

Unlike an ordinary ream of paper or a roll of drawing paper or a drawer full of drawing paper, it also has the narrative pressure of a book built into it; the sense that there is a cover at the front and another at the back, and you open it and you get through to the end.
All these multiplicities of ideas push for these sheets of paper to go back into the book. Both book and films were seen for the first time in this exhibition. A selection of pages used in making both book and films were choreographed into panels of between two and fifty drawings each. The installation The Refusal of Time is a collaboration with composer Philip Miller, projection designer and editor Catherine Meyburgh, choreographer and dancer Dada Masilo, Peter Galison, a scientist from the United States and machine-makers, costume designers and set designers from many parts of the world.
The project was made in a series of workshops over two years. It started as a series of conversations between William Kentridge and Peter Galison, looking at different theories of time from Newtown through to Einstein and black holes; in each case finding the metaphor for the science rather than trying to illustrate it.
